Why Switch From A High Cholesterol Diet To Low?

When it comes to health and diet, there are many factors that we simply don''t have control over. Our body is very complex and naturally digests our foods and convert them to energy and other essential things for the body. We can''t decide exactly what happens to our food once we''ve eaten it.

Genetics also plays a roll in how our body processes food. Some of us are more prone to develop fat stores. Some of us have a harder time processing sugars. Still others have allergic reactions to certain foods. While we may not be able to control our body''s response to food, we can certainly control what foods we give it.

In the case of cholesterol, too much is not a good thing for anyone. However, some of us are more prone to utilizing cholesterol in a way that is harmful or damaging. This is why it is important to have your blood cholesterol levels checked at regular intervals, it is recommended every five years after age 20.

If your cholesterol levels are high it will be necessary that you go on a low cholesterol diet. This is imperative as heightened cholesterol levels are a signal that you may be storing this waxy substance in your arteries which can cause heart disease and lead to heart attack.

Even for those who seem to process the cholesterol just fine judging by a test, it is still a very good idea to stick to a low cholesterol diet. While cholesterol is a part of the human body, we produce enough of it and don''t actually need any in our diet at all! It does us no good and can be very harmful, even fatal.

So how do we reduce our cholesterol intake? First we have to understand where cholesterol comes from. Like ourselves, animals produce cholesterol, too. Whenever we eat animal product we are usually getting some cholesterol with it. We know egg yolks are extremely high in cholesterol and high-fat dairy products, not to mention the most obvious: meats that are high in saturated fats.

Those following a vegan or vegetarian diet have very low levels of cholesterol because of their avoidance of animal products. As we can see, the more we avoid them, the lower our own levels will fall. However, it is not necessary to completely avoid animal products.

Some foods that are healthy to eat and will contribute to a low cholesterol diet are:

egg whites (avoiding the yolk)

Low-fat dairy products (1% milk fat)

Fish- high in protein but low in saturated fat while being high in heart-healthy fats.

Fibrous foods- fiber is an important part of any diet as it aids in digestion and has many other benefits. One of these is that it reduces the amount of cholesterol that is absorbed by the body.

By eating less saturated fats and increasing our consumption of fish, fruits and vegetables, healthy low-fat dairy products and whole grains (wholegrain bread, brown rice, oatmeal quinoa) we head ourselves on a path to a healthier heart and lifestyle. It is also effective in aiding weight loss.
